Synthétique Amazonas

The work is three parts that stage cultivation from end to end. The Agar Display holds the petri-dish beginning, ten discs of agar where the mycelium first takes hold before it is moved on. The Growbox is the production apparatus: a stainless-steel and plexiglass climate cabinet under exo-terra lamps, where spores become mycelium and mycelium becomes fruiting body. A series of a hundred A3 sheets, bagged in plastic, documents the chain. Shown together they are the full lineage; shown apart (as in 2019, before the agar was added), the argument is truncated.
The work has carried several names across five years, and the drift is the project tracking its own deepening. Synthétique Amazonas (2019) named the geographic-imaginary register; Synthetic Farming (2022) moved to the agricultural, the apparatus as agribusiness in miniature; From Internet to Mouth (2024) moved again, to the distribution register: the spore-vial bought in an online forum, the dried fruiting body ending in a buyer's mouth, the whole chain digital-to-biological. The last title names the informal economy the work had been documenting all along.
In the Bodies Farming series, life is something cultivated and managed, and here the material is a living organism with its own imperatives, coaxed and constrained inside an apparatus that is also a small cabinet of forced kinship. The mycelium is not a passive substrate; it is an agent that could break its sterile envelopes and grow where it was not asked to. The work farms it, documents it, and lets the fact of its half-controlled life carry the argument: cultivation as a relationship of power between a maker, a market, and a thing that is alive.
